Scott L. Strohm I am a native of Beaver, Pennsylvania; I was raised in a rural Methodist church where my Grandfather had served as pastor. I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior at a Billy Graham crusade and decided that I needed more than that congregation could provide. I became an active member of the Park Presbyterian Church during High School. I attended Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey, for my undergraduate training. I graduated in 1977 with a degree in Music Education but never sought a teaching job, instead considering only positions in the church. A congregation in Canton, Ohio, hired me as their Minister of Music and Christian Education, with a charge to build a graded music program and to revitalize their Education ministry. It was during my tenure there, that I was blessed to meet and to marry my wife, Kathy, in 1981. She is an accountant by profession and a vital part of my life and ministry. I had sensed God's call at many points in my life. My time in Canton only served to underscore this call. So after four years I resigned and set off to attend Princeton Theological Seminary. The years in Princeton were rich, rewarding, challenging, and exciting. I graduated in 1984 with my Masters of Divinity degree. The next step was also very challenging and exciting; I received a call to the First Presbyterian Church of Edgewood, a suburb of Pittsburgh, where I served as Assistant and then Associate Pastor from 1984 until 1989. By God’s grace, these years were again spent rejuvenating a languishing program ministry. While in Pittsburgh, our lives changed drastically as we were blessed by the birth of our first daughter, Rachel. Our second daughter, Anna, came into our lives while serving in Philadelphia. The girls have added a new dimension to our understanding of God's love, as well as God’s forgiveness. They are both fine students, athletes, and musicians. Rachel just finished her degree in Elementary/Special Education at Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania. Anna is a senior in High School where she is very involved in choir and Show Choir. In 1989, I was called to serve the Chambers Memorial Presbyterian Church in Rutledge, a suburb of Philadelphia. My sixteen years with Chambers were exhilarating, as together, we sought God's vision for the congregation (though, at times, I felt more like a General Contractor than a Pastor, because of the four major capital improvement programs we completed). I have always taken my continuing education very seriously. As a part of that work, after more than six years of study, I received my Doctoral degree in 2001 from the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia. With such a full life, there is far less time for hobbies than I would like. I am a woodworker but fishing is my main distraction (Matthew 4:19 notwithstanding, for fish). Because of this interest, a few years ago the Chambers congregation very generously gave me a 16-foot Lund fishing boat to mark my 10th anniversary as their pastor. I have named the boat “Church Business,” so that when people call, my secretary can say with all sincerity, “I'm sorry, Scott is out on ‘Church Business.’” |
